Venus Flytrap (Dionaea) care
General care guidelines
Venus Flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) are more challenging to grow than many other carnivorous plants, unless they are grown outside. In the St. Louis area, VFTs are best grown outside in a large pot or mini-bog and only need to be brought indoors during the coldest months of the year, e.g. outside from March through December.
Watering: Rainwater, reverse osmosis (RO), distilled, or very low dissolved salts well or tap water. Keep media damp but not soaking wet. During the winter, keep less damp.
Light: Very bright light, e.g. south facing window or under LED lights. Best to grow outside during the summer in mostly full sun.
Potting Media: sandy-peat moss, peat with perlite, etc.
Feeding: This plant tends to catch insects readily if kept outside Hand-feed with live insects that are appropriately-sized to the pitcher.
Unique care needs: VFTs must go into dormancy every winter. In St. Louis, this can be accomplished by leaving the plants outside until the first few nights where it freezes. The leaves will then turn dark/black. At this point, the plants should be brought inside and keep in a basement or refrigerator. See the care guides below for more details.
