Mexican Butterwort (Pinguicula) care

General care guidelines

Mexican Butterworts (Pinguicula spp) are fairly easy to grow if they can be provided bright light, pure water, and moderate temperatures.

Unique characteristics: Many have two types of leaves (heterophyllous), sticky summer leaves that trap insects and succulent winter leaves. The winter leaves readily root and produce new plants.

Watering: Rainwater, reverse osmosis (RO), distilled, or very low dissolved salts well or tap water.  Keep media damp if leaves are in the summer/sticky phase.

Light: Bright light, e.g. south facing window or under LED lights.

Potting Media: sandy-peat moss, peat with perlite, etc.

Feeding: Species tend to catch bugs fairly well. Hand-feeding with dried bloodworms or small flakes of fish food also work.
